Introduction: Designing a Scalable White-Labeled Loyalty Platform

Introduction: Designing a Scalable White-Labeled Loyalty Platform

Accrue’s white-labeled loyalty platform empowers retail and e-commerce businesses, like Snipes, Casper, and West Side Market, to offer personalized customer engagement. The challenge was to create a flexible, scalable design system that could seamlessly integrate with diverse brand identities while maintaining a consistent user experience.

As a UX Designer, I collaborated with developers and stakeholders to build this design system, focusing on reusable components, intuitive interfaces, and streamlined user flows. My work included stakeholder interviews, competitive analysis, and high-fidelity prototypes in Figma, ensuring each brand’s unique identity was preserved without compromising usability.

Spotting Hurdles

Spotting Hurdles

After diving into the Accrue project, it quickly became clear that building a scalable, white-labeled loyalty system came with unique challenges. Each brand, from Snipes to West Side Market, had distinct requirements, customer expectations, and branding needs, making a one-size-fits-all approach impossible.

To address these challenges, I collaborated with stakeholders to identify pain points and gather insights. This involved conducting interviews and analyzing competitor loyalty programs to understand best practices and user expectations. Our goal was to pinpoint the critical barriers to creating a flexible, yet cohesive, loyalty system.

Here’s what we uncovered at a high level:

Here’s what we uncovered at a high level:

Customization Needs

Each brand required a high degree of customization to match their unique brand identity, including flexible UI components, personalized color schemes, and adaptable layouts. The design system needed to support this variability without sacrificing usability or consistency.

Integration Complexity

Many partners have existing technical infrastructures that varied significantly, requiring a flexible integration framework. This meant creating components that could seamlessly plug into a wide range of platforms without disrupting existing workflows.

Designing for Enterprise Clients

Designing for Enterprise Clients

As we expanded Accrue’s white-labeled loyalty platform, we saw opportunity to pitch to enterprise clients like Home Depot and Major League Baseball (MLB). These brands presented unique challenges, given their massive customer bases and complex operational needs.

To prepare, we crafted a design strategy that aligned with their core business goals:

Home Depot

Focused on building long-term customer relationships through contractor rewards and in-store and online integrations. Our pitch highlighted the platform’s ability to support professional buyers and rewards tailored to DIY enthusiasts.

Defining the Challenge

Defining the Challenge

As we prepared to pitch Accrue’s loyalty platform to enterprise clients like Home Depot and MLB, it was essential to clearly define the unique challenges these brands faced. These companies have massive, diverse customer bases and high expectations for personalized experiences, making a one-size-fits-all solution insufficient.

To align our strategy, I collaborated with the team to identify our core objectives. After in-depth discussions, we established two guiding questions that shaped our approach:

These companies have massive, diverse customer bases and high expectations for personalized experiences, making a one-size-fits-all solution insufficient.

To align our strategy, I collaborated with the team to identify our core objectives. After in-depth discussions, we established two guiding questions that shaped our approach:

1.

How might we empower enterprise clients to deliver personalized, scalable loyalty experiences that reflect their brand values and customer expectations?

1.

How might we empower enterprise clients to deliver personalized, scalable loyalty experiences that reflect their brand values and customer expectations?

2.

How can we position Accrue as the go-to loyalty solution for large-scale brands, offering seamless integration, and customizable rewards at scale?

2.

How can we position Radius as a leader in the automotive aftermarket by offering a seamless, value-driven experience?

With these priorities set, we conducted workshops and strategy sessions with stakeholders from both brands, focusing on their specific needs and customer pain points. This approach allowed us to define a clear vision for the platform, ensuring it could deliver the personalized, data-rich experiences that both Home Depot and MLB customers expect.

The Birth of the Accrue Design System

To scale a white-labeled wallet across multiple merchant apps, we built the Accrue Design System using atomic design principles and design tokens. Every component, from buttons to entire flows, was made modular and tokenized for color, typography, and spacing. This allowed us to quickly adapt to each partner’s brand while maintaining consistency and reducing engineering overhead. The result: a scalable system that made it easy to plug Accrue into any platform without starting from scratch.
